A major AMR Corp. shareholder is urging the Fort Worth-based parent of American Airlines Inc. to consider strategic alternatives that would significantly increase shareholder value, including possible selling off its AAdvantage frequent-flier program.

Heres a first: an activist investor extolling the virtues of loyalty. FL Group , the Icelandic fund, wants AMR , parent of American Airlines, to spin off part of its loyalty programme, AAdvantage. It reckons this could add $4bn to AMRs value, compared with a market capitalisation of $5.5bn.
